England captain Andrew Strauss believes that Sri Lanka deserved victory over the visitors in the first Test match of the series.
The tourists failed to launch a comeback in Galle and were forced to accept a 1-0 defeat in the series after Sri Lanka snatched the win by 75 runs.
"We're bitterly disappointed," said Strauss. "In truth we made too many mistakes to win the game.
"In between we fought very hard and there were some outstanding performances - Jimmy Anderson in the first innings, Graeme Swann and the second and Jonathan Trott today.
"But we left ourselves with to much to do mainly with our batting in the first ininings, and we are very disappointed. Credit to Sri Lanka, they outplayed us and thoroughly desrved victory."
South African-born Trott claimed a century but was bowled out before being able to complete a record comeback.
