England batsman Joe Root: 'Peter Moores got the best out of me'

England batsman Joe Root thanks recently-sacked head coach Peter Moores for helping him improve his game "drastically".

England batsman Joe Root has given credit to recently-sacked head coach Peter Moores for helping him develop as a player.

Since the start of last summer Root has scored 1,135 Test runs at an average of almost 95, and was rewarded by being named ECB England Cricketer of the Year on Monday night.

Root, who has been promoted to Test vice-captain by new director of England cricket Andrew Strauss, gave a special mention to Moores.

The 52-year-old was sacked by Strauss earlier this month, and Root is hopeful that his former coach will continue to thrive in his next job.

"I think [my game] has improved drastically," The Guardian quotes Root as saying. "A lot of credit for that has to go to Peter Moores. Over the past year he has definitely got the best out of me along with the rest of the coaching department.

"He was good to work with, a brilliant coach, he knew how to get the best out of me personally and I really hope he goes on to do other great jobs."

Within the 2014-15 campaign, Root scored a Test best of 200 not out against Sri Lanka at Lord's.
