Kevin Pietersen has issued an apology to his England teammates following the announcement that he will return to England duty in the coming months.

The ECB confirmed on Wednesday that Pietersen will be "re-integrated" into the team after a summer of uncertainty regarding his international future due to derogatory texts he sent to members of the South Africa squad.

"It's been a horrible situation for all involved and hopefully we can move forward for a better result for England cricket," said Pietersen. "I'd like to take this opportunity to apologise to my team-mates, all England fans and the ECB for this situation that has arisen over the last couple of months. Thankfully, we have drawn a line under it."

The 32-year-old also claimed that he wants to continue playing for England until the 2015 World Cup.

Pietersen added: "Playing for England is the pinnacle of any cricketer's career and I want a chance to do that again as soon as possible.

"I'm entirely committed to completing the reintegration process we've agreed over the coming weeks and resuming my England career in all formats, hopefully until the 2015 World Cup as long as my body allows."

If negotiations with the ECB are successful, Pietersen could join the squad for the tour of India this winter.
