Trevor Bayliss: 'Moeen Ali could open for England'

England coach Trevor Bayliss suggests that Moeen Ali could open the batting in the series against Pakistan.

England coach Trevor Bayliss has suggested that Moeen Ali could open the batting in the forthcoming series against Pakistan.

Incumbent opener Adam Lyth struggled in the Ashes against Australia, which has led to speculation over a change at the top of the order.

Worcestershire spinner Moeen usually batted at eight in the Ashes and has never been higher than number six in England's side.

When asked if he felt that Moeen could partner Alastair Cook in the United Arab Emirates, Bayliss told BBC Sport: "Possibly, yes.

"Moeen is the type of guy who could bat in a few positions in that top seven."

England face three Tests against Pakistan in October.
