England head coach Trevor Bayliss has claimed that Alastair Cook can remain as captain for "as long as he wants" following their Test series defeat to India.

Cook and the team suffered their third loss of the series by an innings and 36 runs in Mumbai.

England have now lost seven Tests this year, and questions have been raised over Cook's captaincy, but Bayliss is confident with the batsman at the helm.

"From my point of view he's got the job for as long as he wants it," the head coach told Sky Sports News. "Over the past 12, 18 months we've seen improvements in the way he captains the team.

"When you lose, the captain takes a lot of responsibility but he's got broad shoulders."

Cook, who became England captain in 2012, has guided the team to 24 wins in his 58 Tests as skipper and overseen 21 defeats.
