Zafar Ansari suffers injury hours after England call

Surrey all-rounder Zafar Ansari could miss out on England's Test series with Pakistan after suffering a hand injury just hours after his first international call-up.

Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart has revealed that Zafar Ansari "is not in the greatest shape" after suffering a hand injury in a County Championship match against Lancashire.

Earlier on Tuesday, all-rounder Ansari had been selected for England's Test series with Pakistan in the UAE - his first international call-up - but he has emerged as a major doubt for the Tour after misjudging an attempted catch.

Ansari has since gone to hospital with the injury, but Stewart has admitted that the 23-year-old could miss out on representing the Three Lions next month.

Stewart is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "It didn't look very good. He was in a lot of pain in the dressing room.

"What should have been a day of celebration for Zafar, we are now hoping he will be okay. The way he was, there must be some doubt.

"He dropped a catch stood at cover point. The ball came out of the sun, he saw it late and it hit him hard on the left thumb. He is not in the greatest shape."

The first Test of the three-match series begins on October 13.
