England started the final day of the third Test on the brink of a victory which would see the tourists take a 2-1 lead against India.

James Anderson dismissed Pragyan Ojha in the second over of the day as India finished their second innings on 247, with Ravichandran Ashwin left stranded on 91.

England required 41 to record the victory but their chase got off to a nervous start as India's spinners reduced them to 8-3.

However, Ian Bell (28*) and Nick Compton (9*) steadied the ship to lead England to a seven wicket victory in Kolkata.

Read below to find out how England took the lead in the Test series with one match remaining.

Good morning everyone. England fans will be hoping that this morning is just a formality. A superb display with the ball yesterday afternoon means England are agonisingly close to taking a 2-1 lead in this series.

The tourists were probably expecting to be popping the champagne yesterday evening but a stubborn knock from Ashwin means England will bat again today. India lead by only 32 so in truth, this match could end quickly this morning.

Nobody could claim that Ashwin doesn't deserve a century for his stubborn effort in the second innings. Some of his shots have been of the highest class and he can hold his head high at the end of this Test match.

The players are almost ready to begin play on this final day. England will want to do a professional job and end this resistance from the Indian tail quickly.

Ashwin is back out on the pitch with his partner Ojha and the England team look eager to begin proceedings. Steven Finn will bowl the first over of the day.

This ball is only three overs old so the conditions are still pretty challenging for the Indian pair. Ashwin decides against taking a single to square leg so as not to expose Ojha too early in the over. Finn finds some good bounce but Ashwin shows his quality with a punch through the off-side for the first boundary o the morning. A superb pull shot through mid-wicket for four more ends the over but that means Ojha will be on strike for Anderson shortly.

Anderson begins well, beating Ojha's bat with good delivery from the first ball of the over. An optimistic lbw appeal is rejected with the ball clearly going past leg stump.

Wicket! Ojha (3) b Anderson

England get exactly what they wants as Ojha is bowled in the second over. Anderson's delivery clips the top of off stump and the bail eventually falls to the ground. It's very harsh on Ashwin, who is left stranded on 91. Superb knock from the all-rounder but England have not wasted anytime this morning.

England require 41 runs to win the third Test

England have put in another superb performance over these past five days and 41 runs will see them take a crucial lead in this fantastic series.

So, Anderson and Finn share six wickets for 83 runs. On the subcontinent, that really is an impressive achievement from England's pace bowlers.

Cook wants this match over quickly and he's already back out on the pitch with his opening partner, Nick Compton. India will want to take a couple of wickets with them to the final match. Ashwin will bowl the first over.

Cook is off the mark immediately with a prod onto the leg-side for a single and it looks like Compton will play his shots as he paddle sweeps the ball to fine leg for three runs.

Wicket! Cook (1) st Dhoni b Ashwin

Cook, clearly wanting to finish the game quickly, charges down the track but he is beaten in the flight by Ashwin and Dhoni has the simple task of whipping the bails off. Rare failure for England's captain, Jonathan Trott in next.

Trott managed to survive the final ball of Ashwin's over. Ojha will take the new ball from the other end.

Compton looks eager to use his feet against the spin but he twice picks out the fielder at cover. Good start from Ojha, maiden over.

Good work from the England duo as they find two runs when Trott sweeps towards Tendulkar at deep square leg. Another sweep shot follows but this time it's just a single for the Warwickshire batsman.

Wicket! Trott (3) lbw b Ojha

Great start from India! Trott lunges forward to Ojha but he's struck on the pads and it's the easiest of lbw decisions for Rod Tucker. Kevin Pietersen in next and I think there's only one way he'll play this morning.

Pietersen is beaten by a beauty from Ojha but England's number our gets his technique in order to block out a wicket maiden.

Compton reacts well to take a sharp single with a push onto the off-side at the start of Ashwin's over.

Wicket! Pietersen (1) c Dhoni b Ashwin

Control your breathing England fans. India have their third wicket when Pietersen gets a slight edge on the ball, giving Dhoni a simple catch behind the stumps. Ian Bell is the new batsman and England still need 33 runs to win.

Bell is off the mark with two runs to fine leg from his second delivery before a full toss allows the new batsman to flick the ball past mid-wicket for four runs.

Ojha delivers another deadly accurate over as Compton is forced to block six times. It's a maiden and England need 27 runs to win.

Good variations shown by Ashwin in his over as he brings Bell forward before pushing him back on the crease with a flat delivery. Maiden and this is good pressure from India.

Compton does break the run of dot balls with a hurried single midway through Ojha's new over. Great fielding from Sharma on the boundary to restrict Bell to three runs following a flick to deep square leg.

Ashwin goes to full and good footwork from Bell allows him to punch the ball past mid-on for four runs before a push through the cover brings him three more. It's a good over for England as Compton opens the face slightly to guide the ball to the third man boundary.

Good from Ojha throughout the over but a thick inside edge allows Bell to run a single to blemish a possible maiden. England need 11 more runs for victory.

Great shot from Bell as he uses his feet to drive Ashwin through extra cover for four runs as the required target moves into single figures. A single from the final ball means Bell will keep the strike.

Runs for Bell as he rocks onto the back foot to cut the ball to the boundary rope at the start of Ashwin's over. England are nearly there now. Bell then nudges the ball to square leg and the scores are level.

England win the third Test by 7 wickets

A nudge onto the leg-side from Bell secures the win for the tourists and England take a 2-1 lead in the series.

India showed some fight this morning but this has been a dominant performance from England. Superb from Alastair Cook's men and I think a few beer bottles may be drunk today.

That could be an important moment for Bell following his poor run of form with the bat. An unbeaten 28 has led his side to victory this morning and Compton (9*) once again ends a Test match unbeaten at the crease.

The inquest into India's defeat will continue until the beginning of the final match on Thursday. Will India make any changes for that game in Nagpur? A big performance is needed from the hosts if they are to salvage anything from this Test match.

I'll end today's coverage by giving you my man of the match. Alastair Cook's 190 in the first innings allowed England to take control of the Test and he seems to be improving as a captain with every game. It's the captain who will enjoy the headlines but another superb team display means England are in charge of this series. Join us on Thursday when we begin our coverage of the final Test. Thanks for joining me this morning, goodbye.
