Essex coach backs Monty Panesar's Ashes inclusion

Essex coach Paul Grayson believes that England were right to select Monty Panesar for this winter's Ashes squad.

Monty Panesar's coach at Essex, Paul Grayson, has praised the decision to include the spin-bowler in the England squad for this winter's Ashes in Australia.

It appeared that the 31-year-old's international career could have been over after a series of off-the-field issues during his stint with Sussex.

However, his recent loan move to Essex has resulted in an upturn in form, which in turn has seen Panesar being handed a place in the 17-man unit.

"Six or seven weeks ago it would have been very doubtful that he'd get in the squad," Grayson told reporters.

"Essex have played a small part in helping him get on the Ashes tour and it's been a worthwhile exercise bringing him to the club. I don't think he's quite bowling at his best yet, but I don't think he's too far away.

"He was delighted with the news. I think he was a little it nervous about whether he'd get back in. But there's no doubt about his ability. He's a quality spin-bowler."

Panesar has featured in 48 Tests for England.
