Nick Compton believes that he has been treated unfairly by the national team selectors after missing out on a place in the England squad for their Ashes warm-up match against Essex.

Nick Compton has admitted that he was disappointed at being left out of the England squad for their Ashes warm-up match against Essex, adding that he feels he has been treated unfairly by the national selectors.

Compton was given the chance to prove himself with a guest appearance for Worcester against Australia today, going on to score 79 just a week after making 81 against the tourists for regular county Somerset.

However, he is still unlikely to be called into the Ashes squad for the opening Test and admits that he doesn't know where he stands in the international set-up.

"I don't feel that I had a fair crack of the whip. I don't really know where things stand to be honest. I got told I had been dropped. Your guess is as good as mine," PA Sport quotes Compton as saying.

"Would you drop me for an Essex warm-up game and then pick me [for the Ashes]? Isn't that messing a few people around? I don't know. It's been disappointing of late but I'll keep fighting on because I regard myself as a fighter. I've had to do that time and time again.

"People doubted me when I got picked for England; people doubted me in India; they doubted me when I got nought in New Zealand and then I scored two hundreds but they even doubted me after that series. I feel like this was a very good response actually. Last week was a very good response too. Time and time again I get asked to make responses and I feel like I do that every single time. Andy Flower said go away and score runs. I have done that. How many runs is scoring runs?"

The first Test of the Ashes will begin on July 10, with Joe Root expected to open the batting alongside Alastair Cook.
