The outcome of Australia batsman Phil Hughes's surgery is not expected to be known for at least 24 hours after he was taken to hospital with a head injury.

The status of Phil Hughes's condition in hospital is not expected to be understood for at least 24 hours after the Australian batsman suffered a head injury.

The 25-year-old was struck directly in the head by a delivery from Sean Abbott during the West End Redbacks' Sheffield Shield match against the New South Wales Blues at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

After collapsing at the crease, Hughes received mouth-to-mouth resuscitation before being transferred to St Vincent's hospital, where he is in critical condition and undergoing surgery.

According to numerous reports, the outcome of Hughes's operation will not be known for at least another day, but the cricketer was put on life support upon arrival at the hospital.

The match was abandoned following the incident.
