Michael Clarke issues a statement on behalf of the Hughes family following the death of Phil Hughes.

Michael Clarke has issued a statement on behalf of the Hughes family following the death of Phil Hughes at the age of 25.

It was confirmed on Thursday morning that Hughes had failed to regain consciousness after suffering injuries to the brain when struck by a short-pitched delivery at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

"We're devastated by the loss of our much-loved son and brother Phillip," an emotional Clarke, who left the press room immediately after the statement was read out, told reporters at St Vincent's Hospital.

"It's been a very difficult few days. We appreciate all the support we've received from family, friends, players, Cricket Australia and the general public.

"Cricket was Phillip's life, and we as a family shared that love of the game with him.

"We would like to thank all of the medical and nursing staff at St Vincent's Hospital, and cricket NSW medical staff for their great efforts with Phillip. We love you."

Australian prime minister Tony Abbott led the tributes to Hughes on Thursday.
