Nathan Lyon: 'We can still beat England in first Test'

Nathan Lyon insists that Australia can still record a victory in the first Test of The Ashes despite needing 412 to defeat England at Sophia Gardens.

Nathan Lyon has claimed that Australia are capable of chasing down the 412 runs required to win the first Ashes Test of the series.

The Three Lions bowled Michael Clarke's men out for 308 in their first innings, but were dismissed for 289 on day three, leaving the tourists with a mammoth total to chase.

However, Lyon believes that his side can achieve victory if they learn from the mistakes of their first innings at Sophia Gardens.

He told Sky Sports News: "If we bat for two days, we hopefully have the result going our way. We're remaining positive and there's no reason why we can't dig deep tomorrow and day five.

"The pitch is still pretty good, just a bit slow. There didn't seem to be too many demons ad hopefully we have learned from our first innings with the bat – we'll see how we go.

"We'll be a little more patient. We had too many thirties, but you are asking a tail-ender here. We'll look to push on and hopefully a couple of the top five can get big hundreds."

Lyon took bowling figures of 4-75 on day three of the first Test.
