Freddie Evans delights the home crowd

Great Britain's Freddie Evans overcomes Algeria's Illyas Abbadi to reach the last 16 of the Olympic welterweight class.

Great Britain's Freddie Evans produced a fantastic display of counter-punching to oust Algeria's Illyas Abbadi and reach the last 16 of the Olympic welterweight class.

Evans started at a blistering pace and a high-scoring first round ended with the Brit leading by two points.

Abbadi started positively in the second, but was caught time and time again as he came within range to launch his attacks.

Evans also landed the best shot of the fight in the second, throwing the Algerian off balance to extend his lead by five points.

The fight became a bit scrappy in the third round, but Evans was still the man producing the quality.

The Brit did well to stay out of range, using his footwork and head movement to slip Abbadi's gloves.

Evans continued to find the target and eventually ran out a 18-10 winner.
