Anthony Fowler: 'British boxers will come of age in Baku'

British middleweight boxer Anthony Fowler insists that the standard at the European Games will be "very high" as he prepares to get his campaign underway on Tuesday.

Team GB boxer Anthony Fowler has admitted that he will have to be on top of his game if he is to claim a gold medal at the European Games.

The 24-year-old middleweight, who is among the favourites to succeed in the men's event, gets his Baku campaign underway on Tuesday afternoon.

Despite the competition not being as strong as expected, Fowler believes that he and Great Britain's 13 other boxing hopefuls are still in for a tough test.

"It won't be as strong as the Olympics, but some of the best kids in Europe are going to be there, it's going to be a very high standard," he told reporters.

"There's no professional boxing in some parts of eastern Europe so their objective is the Olympics, whereas we lose a lot of our best boxers to the professional ranks.

"We are an inexperienced team. We've got a few young lads who've not really been tested yet, but I honestly believe they can come of age in this tournament."

The boxing event acts as a chance to qualify for the World Championships in Qatar later this year, which in turn will provide the opportunity to reach the 2016 Olympic Games.
