Kevin Mitchell halted by Ismael Barroso in fifth round

Ismael Barroso produces an impressive display to stop Kevin Mitchell in the fifth round of their eliminator for the WBA lightweight title at The O2 Arena.

Kevin Mitchell's hopes of returning to the world title picture have been dealt a blow after he was stopped in the fifth round by the impressive Ismael Barroso.

After recently falling short in his second attempt at a world title in a loss to WBC lightweight champion Jorge Linares, Mitchell was hopeful of setting up a clash with British rival and WBA title holder Anthony Crolla.

However, Barroso used the opportunity to enhance his own reputation at The O2 Arena by rocking the home favourite with a left hook in the opening round.

A controversial knockdown call arrived in the fourth when Mitchell went to the floor after appearing to trip on his rival's legs.

Barroso remained on the front foot to put Mitchell to the canvas in the fifth, and he did not need a second invitation as the referee stepped in after the Venezuelan continued to unleash punches at a shaken Mitchell, who could have no complaints with the timing of the stoppage.
