Jamie McDonnell: 'Beating Tomoki Kameda would make big statement'

WBA bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell admits that he would be making a "big statement" if he can overcome unbeaten Tomoki Kameda in Texas on Saturday night.

WBA bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell has predicted that he will stop Tomoki Kameda in their fight in Texas on Saturday night.

Kameda, who is unbeaten in 31 matches, relinquished his WBO belt in order to face McDonnell, and the Doncaster fighter has admitted that he would be making a "big statement" if he can become the first man to defeat the Japanese star.

The 29-year-old told The Star: "This kid is very well thought of and he's a former unbeaten world champion so beating him will make a big statement.

"Whether I stick around at bantamweight or move up to super-bantamweight, I'll be right at the top of the division.

"I've got no doubt in my mind that I'll win this one. I'm convinced that I'm going to stop this kid."

Tonight's encounter will be McDonnell's second defence of the title he won by overcoming Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat at Wembley Stadium 12 months ago.
