Floyd Mayweather Jnr says that he is close to agreeing a fight with Devon Alexander.

WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jnr has revealed that he is in talks with IBF titlist Devon Alexander regarding a possible unification bout on May 5.

Alexander was supposed to fight Kell Brook later this month, but had to withdraw after suffering an injury to his biceps.

Brook's promoter Eddie Hearn has said that he suspects "something fishy" about Alexander's postponement.

Meanwhile, Mayweather was believed to be in line to face Robert Guerrero, but he posted on Twitter: "The negotiations for my fight are almost done. The front runner is IBF Champion Devon Alexander. It'd be a unification bout at welterweight."

There is still uncertainty about whether the fight will be made, as Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com: "[The comment] came from Mayweather and not me, so I cannot comment on it.

"Last I checked I was working on rescheduling the [Alexander-Brook] fight."

The fight will be Mayweather's first since serving a 90-day jail sentence.
