Three-time Olympic gold medalist Teofilo Stevenson, who famously turned down $5m to turn professional and fight Muhammad Ali, has died at the age of 60.

Former heavyweight boxer Teofilo Stevenson has died at the age of 60.

Latin American news station TeleSUR has reported that he suffered a heart attack.

Stevenson, who won three Olympic gold medals, turned down $5m to turn professional and fight then world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali in the 1970s.

A proud Cuban, Stevenson stayed loyal to the Cuban revolution which outlawed professional sports and said: "I prefer the affection of eight million Cubans."

Stevenson was born in the Las Tunas province in eastern Cuba and is widely considered to be the greatest amateur boxer of all time.
