Paddy Barnes prevails over Thomas Essomba

Ireland's Paddy Barnes defeats Cameroon's Thomas Essomba to advance into the last eight of the Olympic light flyweight class.

Irish light flyweight Paddy Barnes has safely booked his place in the last eight with a solid win over Cameroon's Thomas Essomba.

Barnes made a strong start to the contest and had taken a 5-3 lead heading into the second round.

The Cameroonian tried to apply more pressure, but that played into the hands of the Irishman, who countered nicely to stretch his lead to 11-7.

Barnes was content to see out the victory in the final round by keeping Essomba at range. He finished strongly with a burst of punishing punches.

The judges awarded the Irishman a 15-10 verdict.
