Sam Maxwell: "It was a great feeling"

Team England boxer Sam Maxwell reveals his delight after booking his spot in the quarter-finals of the Commonwealth Games.

Team England boxer Sam Maxwell has said that it was "a great feeling" to book his spot in the quarter-finals of the Commonwealth Games.

Welterweight Maxwell, who beat Ikani Falekaono in his opening bout, overcame tricky Kenyan Denis Okoth in the round of 16 on Sunday afternoon to advance into the final eight of his division.

"I am glad that I had the first fight that I did. I got my rustiness out of the way and I got a good win, but today was obviously a step up and I liked that challenge," he told Sports Mole.

"I couldn't just do what I wanted, he put me under pressure at times and I had to think on my feet. It was a good match.

"I feel great out there. We have been working on confidence in the squad and I picked out where people in the crowd are from home and the boxers so I can get a bit of support from them."

"It was a great feeling. All the crowd are 100% behind us. Just like back at home, the support is unreal. Absolutely unreal."

Maxwell also claimed that everyone in the England boxing camp "is buzzing" following a brilliant start to the Games.

"Yeah everyone is buzzing. Everyone wants to win and we are all capable of winning gold medals. So it is pushing everyone on," he added.

Maxwell's next bout is against India's Manoj Manoj Kumar on Tuesday.
