Scott Fitzgerald hails "unbelievable" gold medal

Team England welterweight boxer Scott Fitzgerald reveals his delight at winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in an exclusive chat with Sports Mole.

Team England boxer Scott Fitzgerald revealed his delight at winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in a conversation with Sports Mole immediately after his bout.

Fitzgerald overcame India's Mandeep Jangra in the final of the welterweight division in Glasgow on Saturday evening to claim the top medal in his weight class.

"It is just unbelievable to be honest. It has not really sunk in. It hasn't even sunk in that I had the bronze so I will take some time to relax now and when it sinks in, all the injuries I have got will not matter. That gold medal will take any pain away," he said in a one-on-one interview.

"It was a dominant performance. I knew he was highly-ranked in the world. I knew what I was up against, but it just got me fired up.

"I stayed focused, I had help off the psychologist Chris Marshall, who has got me focusing very well. With the coaches keeping me calm as well. I performed well and I am happy."

Fitzgerald suffered a deep cut to his eye in the early rounds of the competition, which again opened up in the final but did not stop him from claiming victory.
