Dr Jack Ramsay, the former head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, has died at the age of 89 following a long battle with cancer.
The family of Ramsay announced the death, stating that he "led the greatest life that one could lead" in a short statement released to the press.
The Hall of Fame coach spent over 20 years in the NBA during his career, which included spells with the Trail Blazers, the Indiana Pacers and the Philadelphia 76ers.
It was his stint with Portland which earned him the most praise as he took the team to the NBA title in 1977 at the end of his first season.
Ramsay was diagnosed with melanoma in 2004, while he also later fought prostate cancer and most recently a bone marrow syndrome.
