Welsh Athletics chief 'shocked' by Gareth Warburton charge

The chief executive of Welsh Athletics says that he is shocked over Gareth Warburton's doping charge, which rules him out of the Commonwealth Games.

The chief executive of Welsh Athletics, Matt Newman, has expressed his "shock" over Gareth Warburton's doping charge.

It was revealed on Wednesday that the 800m runner would not compete in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games after being provisionally suspended for breaching anti-doping violations.

"There's a real sense of shock about what's come out in the press release," Newman told Radio Wales Sport.

"Clearly Gareth is devastated by the news and also it's been a real surprise and shock to Welsh Athletics as well."

This summer's Games kick off in Glasgow on July 23.
