Tyson Gay suspended for one year

American sprinter Tyson Gay accepts a one-year suspension and returns his silver Olympic medal after testing positive for a banned substance.

American sprinter Tyson Gay has been suspended for one year for using a banned substance.

The United States Anti-Doping Agency confirmed that the 31-year-old tested positive for an exogenous androgenic anabolic steroid and/or its metabolites in July 2012.

The organisation said in a statement: "We appreciate Tyson doing the right thing by immediately withdrawing from competition once he was notified, accepting responsibility for his decisions, and fully and truthfully cooperating with us in our ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding his case."

Gay has not competed since being informed of the positive test ahead of last year's World Championships in Russia, allowing his suspension to be backdated to June 23 2013.

He has accepted the ban, and has already returned the silver medal that he won as part of the USA's 4x100m relay team at the London Olympics.
