World Champion Dai Greene admits that athletics could be heading for a 'Lance Armstrong moment' in light of the recent doping scandals.

World 400m hurdles champion Dai Greene has admitted that athletics could be heading for its very own 'Lance Armstrong moment' in light of recent doping reports.

High-profile athletes such as Tyson Gay, Asafa Powell, Sherone Simpson and Veronica Campbell-Brown all face drug bans, while Turkey and Russia have suspended a number of their own athletes for doping offences recently.

With the World Athletics Championships set to get underway this weekend, the Welshman reveals his frustration at drug cheats.

"There are a lot of big names who won't be there in Moscow, which is sad for the sport," Greene told The Telegraph. "At the same time, there are a lot of reports on doping which detract from the performances you see.

"As a clean athlete, it's frustrating to read that these things go on. Cycling had a horrible moment for a few years and it culminated with Lance, and athletics seems to be heading the same way.

"But cycling came out the other side of it and is big in the UK and is doing well. So hopefully athletics comes out stronger from all the negative press it's getting at the moment."

Greene recently vowed to defend his world title, despite injury concerns heading into the championships in Moscow.
