Greg Rutherford "over the moon" with Diamond League win

British Olympic champion Greg Rutherford speaks of his happiness following his season-best showing at the Diamond League meeting in Birmingham.

Greg Rutherford has admitted that he was "over the moon" to have won today's Diamond League meeting in Birmingham.

The 28-year-old headed into the triple jump event with a slight concern over a thigh injury, but he put that to one side by leaping a season-best 8.35m, which was also his biggest ever jump on home soil.

After his triumph, the Olympic champion told Sports Mole that he was delighted to have finished ahead of an eight-man field that included fellow countrymen Chris Tomlinson and Dan Bramble.

"I'm over the moon. It's always great to win a Diamond League competition. Coming into this I knew that the field was in good spirits and good condition, so from that point of view it was going to be tough," he said.

"I said yesterday that I was holding an injury and I still wasn't sure what was going to happen today. I only had to take three jumps and one of them was the longest I've ever jumped in the UK, so I'm really happy with that.

"I'm a bit tight, but that's fully expected. Every time you jump half decent you're always going to be a bit tight. We're going to have to assess [the injury], do some work on it and see if I can jump on Thursday [in Oslo]."

The victory has put Rutherford joint-top of the Diamond League standings with Russia's Aleksandr Menkov, who did not compete in Birmingham.
