Meseret Defar claims 5,000m gold

Ethiopia's Meseret Defar wins the women's 5,000m at the London Olympics.

Meseret Defar won the women's 5,000m title at the London Olympics this evening.

The Ethiopian kicked hard down the home straight to move her way from Kenyan Vivian Cheruiyot, who was forced to settle for the silver medal.

Defar, who won gold over the same distance in Athens back in 2004, eventually crossed the line in 15:04.25.

Pre-race favourite Tirunesh Dibaba was forced to settle for the bronze medal.

British duo Jo Pavey and Julia Bleasdale finished seventh and eighth respectively.
