British long-jumper Chris Tomlinson is in confident mood ahead of his bid for Olympic success, despite now being one of the veterans of Team GB.

Tomlinson, now 30, burst onto the scene when he jumped 8.27m a decade ago and has been one of Britain's more famous athletes ever since.

He has only one major medal, European bronze, a feat which has now been equalled by fellow British record holder Greg Rutherford.

However, Tomlinson is confident that he will perform well in London.

"My form is coming good at the right time," he said.

"I had an operation at the end of last year and it took me a bit of time to get over it but I have had some strong competitions lately.

"I have been second and third in a couple of major Diamond league events."

The Middlesbrough jumper leapt a season's best 8.26m last month to take him up the seventh in the world rankings and he maintains that none of the top men are jumping particularly well.

He continued: "Nobody in long jump is really jumping out of the pit, so I have certainly got the potential to go there and do well.

"It is just a matter of timing, and we will go there and see what happens."

Qualification for the long jump takes place tonight and the final will be tomorrow evening.
