France were favourites for gold but could only finish in second, with Russia winning bronze.

Both Britain and France won 23 medals at the Championships, but the former's 12 golds eclipsed the nine of France to sit atop the medal table.

Just three of Russia's 22 medals were gold and they ended up in fourth place behind Germany, who won four golds.
