Jake Heyward and Eilish McColgan claim more medals for Great Britain at the European Championships in Munich, finishing on the podium in the 1,500m and 5,000m respectively.

Jake Heyward has produced a stellar run in the men's 1,500m final to earn silver at the European Championships in Munich.

The 23-year-old was below his best in the semi-finals, only qualifying by the narrowest of margins as a fastest loser, but he was tactically perfect as he finished second behind a dominant Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

The Olympic champion was always in control as he led from the front, effectively leaving Heyward and a number of others to contest for the remaining podium places.

Heyward remained patient, recognising that Ingebrigtsen was far too ahead out in front, and he kept his composure to move into second position on the final bend and hold it with minimal fuss.

In doing so, the Welshman wins the first major of his career, while Spain's Mario Garcia held on to secure the bronze-medal position.

Meanwhile, Eilish McColgan added to the silver that she earned in the 10,000m by claiming bronze in the women's 5,000m.

Earlier this week, the Scot was powerless as Yasemin Can surged clear and comfortably held on for gold, and it appeared at one stage that lightning was about to strike twice.

However, Germany's Konstanze Klosterhalfen delighted the home crowd by keeping pace with the Turkish frontrunner before eventually passing her on the penultimate lap.

Can was unable to offer a response, enabling Klosterhalfen to pick up the biggest win of her career, while McColgan came under no pressure for the final spot on the podium.
