Yuliya Zaripova takes 3,000m steeplechase gold

Yuliya Zaripova wins gold for Russia in the final of the women's 3000m steeplechase.

Russia's Yuliya Zaripova claimed the Olympic gold medal from this evening's women's 3,000m steeplechase.

The 26-year-old was always in contention as she settled herself towards the front of the field during the opening exchanges of the race.

Then, having heard the bell, Zaripova made a move for the front and continued to move away from her rivals on her way to winning in 9:06.72, which was the third-quickest time ever over that distance.

Silver went to Tunisia's Habiba Ghribi, who set a national record time of 9:08.37.

Ethiopia's Sofia Assefa took the bronze medal.
