Wilson Kipsang breaks marathon world record in Berlin

Kenyan runner Wilson Kipsang breaks the world marathon record by winning the Berlin race in a time of two hours, three minutes and 23 seconds.

Kenyan runner Wilson Kipsang has broken the world marathon record by 15 seconds on his way to winning the Berlin race on Sunday.

The 31-year-old finished the 26.2 mile course in a time of two hours, three minutes and 23 seconds to beat the pace set by his compatriot Patrick Makau in the German capital two years ago.

"I'm very happy that I have won and broken the world record," Kipsang told reporters.

"I was really inspired by [fellow Kenyan] Paul Tergat when he broke the world record here 10 years ago and I'm very happy that I was in a position to break the record on the same course."

There was a Kenyan clean sweep on the podium as Eliud Kipchoge (2:04:05) and Geoffrey Kipsang (2:06:26) finished second and third respectively.
