Kenya's David Rudisha has won Olympic gold in the men's 800m in a new world record of 1:40.91 this evening.

The favourite took the lead in the opening 100m and never looked back, gradually increasing his advantage and streaking to the finish line in a new fastest time.

Great Britain's Andrew Osagie crossed the line in eighth but managed a new personal best that ranks as the fourth-quickest in British history.

Seven of the eight runners ran lifetime bests in a fast-paced final.

Rudisha, who has been labelled as 'the greatest athlete you've never heard of', eclipsed the previous world record by a 10th of a second.
