Italy's Assunta Legnante focuses on positives after shot put victory

Italy's first Paralympic gold medallist at the London Games Assunta Legnante says that she is more positive since losing her sight completely.

Italy's Paralympic shot-putter Assunta Legnante has revealed that she has a more positive outlook on life after losing her sight completely.

The athlete became Italy's first gold medallist of the London Games after winning the women's F11/12 shot put final at the Olympic Stadium this morning.

"The Assunta of before is not there anymore," The Telegraph quotes Legnante as saying. "It's the blind Assunta now. You start from zero again.

"I can now look at life in a positive way because blindness is more a mental condition than physical. This gives me the possibility to go back to live and to feel life."

Legnante was forced to stop competing in non-disabled sport after her congenital glaucoma condition made her completely blind.
