Andy Vernon: '5000m performance better than expected'

Andy Vernon declares himself "really pleased" with his performance in the men's 5000m following an injury-plagued few months.

England's Andy Vernon has declared that he is "really pleased" with his sixth-placed finish in the men's 5000m.

The 28-year-old long-distance runner has suffered from numerous injuries this year, but still completed the course in a time of 13:11.50 - his second quickest ever.

"That was better than expected because my last six months have been really difficult," Vernon told reporters. "I've reduced my mileage to 30 miles per week and while I've been doing lots to keep fit, it's not the same as running.

"I wasn't coming here in that sort of shape but I ran my second fastest time ever, so I'm really pleased."

Kenya's Caleb Ndiku won the race at Hampden Park.
