Anton Prilepov, the Belarusian archer ranked 19th in the world, has secured a narrow victory over Iceland's Sigurjon Atli Sigurdsson, ranked 915th, in the men's eliminations rounds.
Prilepov, 31, forfeited his third arrow of the first set after failing to fire in time, and had to find three perfect 10s in the final set to be sure of victory over his 42-year-old opponent.
"By the time I had prepared my bow and my arrow, I had run out of time. I did not pay attention to the monitor. I always take my time to shoot, and 20 seconds are not quite enough for me," Prilepov told reporters.
"In the set before last I got myself together. I knew I had to shoot well."
British archer Kieran Slater secured victory in the round with a 6-2 win over Russian athlete Alexander Kozhin.
