Washington Redskins win scrappy encounter

The Washington Redskins beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 24-13 in a match blighted by injuries, mistakes and turnovers.

Robert Griffin III was once again left on the sidelines as the Washington Redskins ran out 24-13 winners over the Pittsburgh Steelers in a pre-season match last night.

Griffin watched on as his side battled to a scrappy victory, although an injury to stand-in quarterback Kirk Cousins placed more emphasis on what is becoming a problem area for the Redskins.

The Redskins opened the scoring when Ryan Kerrigan intercepted a Ben Roethlisberger pass for a 22-yard touchdown with 8:24 left in the first quarter.

Shaun Siusham hit two field goals in the second quarter but a touchdown from Leonard Hankerson, who was hit by a 10-yard pass from third-choice quarterback Rex Grossman, and a Kai Forbath kick gave the hosts a 17-6 lead at half time.

The Steelers got their solitary touchdown with 14:54 left in the fourth quarter when rookie quarterback Landry Jones found Derek Moyes in the end zone from 10 yards.

It was the Redskins who finished off the scoring, however, as Roy Helu went on a 30-yard run into the end zone with 3:21 left on the clock.
