Commissioner Roger Goodell says NFL playoff expansion idea "has support"

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says that introducing two more playoff places into the league would be great for all fans of the sport.

Commissioner Roger Goodell has admitted that the possibility of expanding the NFL playoffs from 12 to 14 teams is generating both interest and support.

Despite a worry that offering more post-season spots will diminish the quality of the playoffs, Goodall has argued that there are both competitive and financial reasons to expand.

He told NFL.com: "I think there is a tremendous amount of interest in this, possibly even to the point of support.

"But there are also things we still want to make sure we do right. We've been very incremental in trying to do this. We believe competitively it could make our races toward the end of the season even more exciting, more teams vying for playoff positions, which is great for our fans."

Although Goodell is in favour of making a change, it is unlikely that any proposals will be put in effect for the forthcoming season, with expansion in the 2015 season far more probable.
