New York Jets coach Rex Ryan has admitted that he was "disappointed" with quarterback Geno Smith's training display earlier today.

Smith, who is currently in competition with Mark Sanchez for the starting quarterback jersey, threw three interceptions during the practice.

The rookie was nursing a slight ankle injury that could see Sanchez picked above him for the second match in a row on Saturday, and Ryan acknowledged that the 22-year-old's "worst" performance could have been affected by the injury.

"It was brutal. That was Geno's worst day, obviously. The ankle is part of it. That's way too many picks. He didn't look comfortable today," Ryan told reporters.

"Obviously, he has to come back from it. He will come back from it. It was a bad day. We've seen guys have bad days, but this was a really bad day.

"Was I disappointed that he had a day like today? Absolutely. These days happen, but you don't expect them to happen."

Smith was chosen by the Jets as the 39th overall pick in this year's draft.
