Report: New York Jets' offensive coordinator wants Geno Smith to start

New York Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg will reportedly back Geno Smith to win the starting quarterback's job this season over Mark Sanchez.

New York Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg will reportedly back Geno Smith to win the starting quarterback's job this season over Mark Sanchez.

The Jets selected Smith with the 39th pick in the 2013 Draft but the 22-year-old sat behind Sanchez for the majority of pre-season and struggled during his time on the field.

However, a shoulder injury to Sanchez has paved the way for Smith to start the season for Rex Ryan's side, much to the delight of Mornhinweg who wants the former West Virginia quarterback to lead his offense this year, reports NFL.com.

The Jets open their regular season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 8.
