Todd Bowles: 'Geno Smith in position to be starting quarterback'

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles admits that Geno Smith would be the club's starting quarterback if the 2015 season began tomorrow.

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles has revealed that Geno Smith is in prime position to be the club's starting quarterback for the 2015 season.

Jets owner Woody Johnson admitted that he thought Smith was "way ahead" of Draft prospect Marcus Mariota to play in the next campaign, while the AFC East team also traded for veteran signal caller Ryan Fitzpatrick to boost competition.

However, Bowles is adamant that Smith would be the club's starter if the season began tomorrow, despite his struggles in his first two years in the league.

"He's the number one guy right now," Bowles told NFL Network.

"Fitzpatrick is injured and we don't have a draft yet, but we're looking at a competition there based on the way he finished the last game.

"Some of the things he did, he did a great job doing that but without seeing him and sitting down and talking to him it's kind of hard to say right now. He has made some strides."

Smith threw for 2,525 yards along with 13 touchdowns to 13 interceptions for the Jets last season.
