New York Giants defensive end Robert Ayers has been ruled out for the rest of the season after he suffered a torn pectoral muscle during Sunday's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Ayers had five sacks so far this season in limited playing time, which tied him with Jason Pierre-Paul for the team lead in that category.
The 29-year-old signed a two-year free-agent contract with the franchise back in March, but his salary for 2015 is not guaranteed.
With Ayers out and defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka currently dealing with a knee injury, the Giants will likely give more playing time to second-year end Damontre Moore and rookie Kerry Wynn over the final five games.
Wynn made his NFL debut on Sunday after being inactive over the first 11 games of the season, and he was credited with half a sack.
