The New Orleans Saints announce that safety Jairus Byrd will miss the entire NFL season having torn his lateral meniscus ligament during practice.

New Orleans Saints safety Jairus Byrd will miss the rest of the NFL season after he was placed on IR by the team.

Byrd has torn his lateral meniscus ligament following an incident during practice on Thursday, with Rafael Bush expected to replace him in the side.

"It's terrible for the young man. He has worked so hard," said Saints defensive coach Rob Ryan, according to the NFL's official website.

Byrd has only just signed a six-year contract worth a total of $54m (£33.8m) with New Orleans.
