Minnesota Vikings announce Matt Cassel as starter

Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer announces that Matt Cassel is his side's starting quarterback for the 2014 season, beating Teddy Bridgewater for the job.

Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer has confirmed that Matt Cassel will be his side's starting quarterback for the 2014 season.

Cassel, Christian Ponder and first-round Draft pick Teddy Bridgewater were in a three-way battle during training camp to win the role, but the veteran managed to secure the job.

Zimmer told reporters: "I told the team this morning that Matt Cassel will be the starter going into the 2014 season.

"Matt did not do anything to lose the job this pre-season. I think he's played great. The team has a lot of confidence in him. They feel good about his veteran leadership and presence."

The Vikings face the St Louis Rams in their season opener on September 7.
