Gil Brandt: 'Johnny Manziel out of Heisman Trophy running'

NFL analyst Gil Brandt says that Johnny Manziel will struggle to win a second consecutive Heisman Trophy award.

NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt believes that Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel will not win the Heisman Trophy for a second year running.

Manziel won the award - given to the most outstanding college football player each year - in 2012 and is among the contenders to pick up the honour again this time around.

However, Brandt has said that after he 'took a hit in style points' during Saturday's defeat to the LSU Tigers, Manziel will struggle to gain the votes he will require.

Brandt wrote in his blog on NFL.com: "Manziel completed only two of his first 11 pass attempts and was off the mark for much of the game against a very fast defense, who did a good job putting pressure on him.

"I thought Manziel had to win his last two games to have a shot at winning it, so Saturday's loss more or less took him out of the running.

"When you get beat that soundly in a nationally televised game, you lose a lot of votes."

Manziel ended the game with just 16 of 41 pass attempts completed. He threw for 224 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, while he gained 54 yards rushing.

The 20-year-old sophomore is widely tipped to be a top pick in the NFL Draft in either 2014 or 2015.
