Denver Broncos avoid New York Jets upset

The Denver Broncos avoid an upset to inflict a fifth straight defeat on the struggling New York Jets, running out 31-17 winners at the MetLife Stadium.

The New York Jets have slumped to a fifth consecutive defeat having been beaten 31-17 by the Denver Broncos at the MetLife Stadium this evening.

The Broncos made a quick start to the match, with Peyton Manning sending Demaryius Thomas far downfield on the opening play, although they were ultimately forced to settle for a 37-yard Brandon McManus field goal.

The hosts were the first to record a touchdown as Geno Smith floated a pass over to Jace Amaro, who just about managed to get his feet down before falling out of bounds.

The Jets did a relatively good job of frustrating the Broncos offence for much of the first half, but Manning eventually found a way through when he picked out Thomas with a one-yard touchdown pass.

The visitors extended their lead to 10 at the break in the closing stages of the second quarter as Julius Thomas got on the end of another Manning pass to make it 17-7.

The same pair combined for the opening score of the third quarter as Manning continued to edge towards Brett Favre's touchdown record with a four-yard pass for his third of the match.

The hosts reduced the deficit to 14 points in the closing stages of the third, with Nick Folk slotting over a 30-yard field goal.

Rex Ryan's side made things interesting in the fourth quarter as Smith and Eric Decker combined for a two-yard score that brought them within striking distance of the Broncos.

They had a chance to force overtime in the closing stages too, but the result was put beyond doubt when Aqib Talib intercepted a pass and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown.
