Cleveland Browns announce stadium overhaul plans

Cleveland Browns CEO Joe Banner says that the city must "feel positive" about the franchise's plans to revamp their FirstEnergy Stadium.

The Cleveland Browns have announced a two-year, $120m (£75m) proposal to refurbish their FirstEnergy Stadium.

The plans include the installation of video scoreboards, escalators and a reduction of 3,000 seats, and will be presented to the city's planning commission on Thursday, while Mayor Frank Jackson and city officials will also be approached about approval and funding for the project.

Browns chief executive officer Joe Banner is quoted by NBC Sports as saying: "We have to do this together [as a team and as a city].

"Obviously, the planning commission and a number of agencies in the city would have to be in line and approving this project for it to happen economics aside, and obviously economics aren't an aside, so there is nothing that can happen to the stadium without the city feeling positive."

Placing a dome or roof on the stadium has been ruled out due to the costs, and the Browns also plan to continue playing on grass rather than switching to a synthetic surface.

Internal discussions about building a new stadium were held, but the Browns opted to make enhancements and improvements to the 15-year-old ground which was built when Cleveland was awarded a franchise in 1998.
