Steve Smith to miss Atlanta Falcons clash

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith will miss their final 2013 regular season game against the Atlanta Falcons with a knee sprain.

The Carolina Panthers have announced that Steve Smith will not play against the Atlanta Falcons this weekend.

The wide receiver sustained a knee sprain during the 17-13 win over the New Orleans Saints last weekend, forcing him out of the game.

Head coach Ron Rivera told reporters: "Steve has actually improved a lot. In Steve's way he basically said if I had to I would play this weekend. He probably couldn't, but he would try.

"It's about going forward. This game is very important and we know it. But there are other things ahead, too.

"It will also be good to see as far as Ted Ginn is concerned and Domenik Hixon. These three guys have done some really good things for us. It will help us gauge where we're at."

The Panthers, who are already guaranteed a place in the NFL playoffs, can clinch their division with a win tomorrow.
