Ken Whisenhunt is fired by the Arizona Cardinals after six seasons as head coach.

Ken Whisenhunt has said that he is proud of what he achieved as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, despite being sacked by the organisation.

Whisenhunt is one of seven head coaches to lose his job following the conclusion of the regular NFL season at the weekend.

In a statement, Whisenhunt said: "I'm very proud of what we as a team and as an organisation achieved during that time.

"We all understand this business, and when you don'€™t win enough games, changes are made. That doesn't mean it's easy, but you definitely don't have to look far to find people that have it much worse.

"I want to especially thank Cardinals fans who treated my family and me so well and made our time in Arizona so special."

The Cardinals also fired general manager Rod Graves, as well as their assistant head coach, offensive coordinator, offensive quality control coach and the coaches for quarterback, wide receivers and running backs.

Arizona finished last in the NFC West, winning just five games during the 2012 season.
