Returning Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has revealed that David Tennant and Catherine Tate will make a dramatic comeback to the show in 2023.
Filming has now begun on the sci-fi drama's 60th anniversary special - due to air in late 2023 - and paparazzi pictures have appeared to capture Tennant and Tate back in their roles as The Doctor and Donna Noble respectively.
Jodie Whittaker will bow out of the show later this year, with Ncuti Gatwa recently confirmed as her replacement, and it remains unclear how Tennant's return will dovetail with that regeneration.
Confirming the news, Davies teased: "They're back! And it looks impossible - first, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna, what on earth is happening?
"Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can confirm is that it's going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime."
Donna and The Doctor parted ways in 2008 as the Time Lord was forced to wipe her memory of their time together in order to keep her alive.
